They say travel broadens the mind and its great to try new places. I’am sure however, many of us are guilty of playing it safe and going to the same destinations multiple times year in year out because its what we know, perhaps it is a hotel or a particular area we are familiar with that draws us back.
What we need to realise though is that in order to experience new cultures, whether its to get that epic picture for Instagram or simply try new food, we need to expand or horizons which is why I've put together a quick fire recommendation of three stunning destinations you must check out in 2018.
Named one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2018, Malta is a Mediterranean archipelago situated between Sicily and North Africa with Valletta being its capital. It is a country steeped in history, art and culture where you can indulge yourself in everything from stunning baroque facades to more modern creations by the likes of Renzo Piano, the architect of London’s Shard. Culture vultures will rejoice as various theatrical and music events will be popping up in many locations all of which you can check out at https://valletta2018.org
My hotel recommendation would be the Casa Ellul. With prices starting at £181 per night, this beautiful, neoclassic boutique hotel is a delightful combination of new meets old with lush marble throughout and outdoor hot tubs on the roof. Based in the heart of Valletta it is also a handy 6 minute walk to the 16th century St Johns Co-Cathedral. Apparently Chris Hemsworth also stayed here during the filming of Thor Ragnarok so it certainly cant be to bad a choice for a few nights.
Alentejo Coast, Portugal
I must confess that since I was a child, Portugal has been a favourite destination of mine. The Alentejo Coast is a more rustic place and an area awash with some of the best beaches in Europe making it ideal for surfing, Sao Torpes specifically if it is a hobby of yours. If you are looking to just purely relax any of the beaches will do however a top pick would be Almograve beach. Divided into two sections of rocks and cliffs or lush sandy dunes there is something here for everybody. Whilst there, I would consider a fantastic tour at one of the incredible vineyards making sure you get a delightful glass of one of Portugal's finest exports.
Hotel choice here I would go for the the Ecorkhotel. A simplistic, white walled hotel with stunning sleek lines and views to die for. Rooms start at £60 in low season in which when you see images I'm sure you will agree is well worth the money.
I don't think there is a city in the world which has such a colourful, vibrant glow as Tokyo. It is almost like the afore mentioned Valletta in Malta with its mixture of historic buddhist temples and ultramodern skyscrapers however just with a lot more neon lights. The main question we must ask is what isn't there to do in Tokyo? From sampling incredible seafood in the home of sushi, to taking in a sumo wrestling match or people watching at the incredible and fascinating fashion, this city has something for everyone. If you want to venture out a little you could visit the imposing Mount Fuji or ride the lighting quick bullet train, Tokyo has to be on your 2018 destination list.
Hotel choice for Tokyo is very much based on whether you want to do things traditionally or modern. My pick would be the neat little boutique Claska Hotel. With rooms starting at £201 a night, it features 20 differently designed rooms by local designers with quirky finishes, and notable Japanese pieces like the classic futon mattress.
Of course when you do go on one of your trips this year, wherever the destination may be, it is important that you are properly prepared. With this in mind the Monroe London Travel Kit is the ideal companion. Packed with six essential items such as our invigorating Hair & Body wash to the delectable smelling Cologne, it will keep you looking and feeling sharp, ready to enjoy whatever activities you have planned.
